Colchón híbrido: qué es, para quién y los mejores modelos

Hybrid mattress: what it is, who it’s for, and the best models

In short

A hybrid mattress combines a pocket-sprung core with memory foam or latex comfort layers: the springs provide support, ventilation, and motion isolation; the foam welcomes you and distributes pressure. For most people and couples, we recommend the Original Hybrid (over 2000 micro-springs, firm support with comfort and a washable cover), Morfeo's most popular mattress. If you want it a notch less firm and cooler, choose the Altus.

What is a hybrid mattress?

It is a mattress with two systems working together: a pocket-sprung core at the bottom; one or more layers of memory foam, latex, or other foams on top. There is usually a transition layer between the two so you don't feel the springs through the surface.

Each part does a different job:

  • The pocket-sprung core supports your weight. Each spring is in its own fabric pocket and compresses on its own, so it only dips where there is weight. This provides motion isolation and internal ventilation: air circulates between the springs.
  • The comfort layers determine how it feels when you lie down. Memory foam adapts slowly and envelops you; latex is more elastic and responsive.

What is not a hybrid: a block of foam with a catchy brand name, or a traditional spring mattress (with interconnected springs) with padding on top. If the product page doesn't say "pocket springs" or "pocket micro-springs," it isn't one.

Hybrid versus memory foam and springs

The quickest way to understand a hybrid is to put it next to what it combines. No ratings or percentages: the actual result depends on each model, but the trend of each technology is clear.

Criterion Memory foam (foam on foam) Pocket springs with padding Hybrid
Support Depends on the bottom block Firm and responsive From the springs
Adaptability Very high By zones, more neutral surface High
Heat Tends to retain it Ventilates well Ventilates; depends on the top layer
Motion isolation Good Very good Very good
Changing positions More difficult Easy Easy
Mattress weight Light to move Heavier Heavier

If your specific question is about memory foam or springs, we have it covered in memory foam or pocket springs: which is better.

Who is a hybrid mattress for?

It is the option that best suits most people, especially these:

  • Couples. Pocket springs isolate movement: if your partner turns over or gets up, you barely notice. And if you weigh different amounts, the mattress won't tilt to one side. See also our guide to the best mattress for couples.
  • Those who get a little warm but don't want to give up the feel of memory foam. The core ventilates what the foam accumulates.
  • Those who change positions during the night: the springs respond quickly and don't leave you "trapped".
  • Those who sleep on their side and need their shoulder and hip to sink in a little without their spine bending: the comfort layer welcomes you and the core supports you. If this is your case, also check out our guide to mattresses for side sleepers.

If your back hurts

No mattress treats a back problem. What a good hybrid can do is keep your spine aligned while you sleep. If the pain persists, consult your doctor or physical therapist. We explain it in more detail in how to choose a mattress if you have back pain.

How to compare hybrid mattresses

Two mattresses can be called "hybrids" and look nothing alike. These are the points that truly differentiate them, in order of importance:

  1. The spring core. That they are pocket springs is the bare minimum. Next, how many and what size: micro-springs fit in greater numbers on the same surface and distribute support at more points. Also ask if there is edge support, which matters if you sit on the side.
  2. The comfort layers. What material (memory foam, latex, foam) and how many layers. More memory foam gives a more enveloping feel and more heat; latex responds faster and retains less temperature.
  3. The stated firmness and who it is for. Firm, medium-firm, or medium. A serious brand explains which profile each one is for, it doesn't just give a number.
  4. The outer fabric. It is what touches your skin and decides a good part of the coolness: thermoregulating fabrics, natural linen, or cotton behave differently.
  5. The cover. If it is removable and washable, the mattress stays clean for years. If not, you will need a protector from day one.
  6. The maximum guaranteed weight per person.
  7. The home trial and warranty. A hybrid is evaluated by sleeping on it for several weeks.

What doesn't tell you much: the total height on its own, or a number of springs without knowing what size they are.

Original Hybrid or Altus: which one to choose

They are our two micro-spring hybrids: the Original Hybrid and the Altus. They share the core of over 2000 pocket micro-springs; they differ in firmness, finish, and cover. The Original Hybrid also has OEKO-TEX® Class 1 certification, and the Altus measures 28 cm high.

Two other options with a pocket-sprung core: the Nature, with natural latex and organic cotton and medium firmness, for those who want to feel the mattress softer when lying down; and the Morfeo XL Mattress, with pocket springs and high-density foam, designed for people over 100 kg. All the others are guaranteed up to 95 kg per person. You have them all in the hybrid mattress collection.

When a hybrid mattress is not for you

We prefer to tell you before you buy:

  • If you have an adjustable bed. From our range, the mattress for an adjustable bed is the Juvenil Lite, with an HR core. If you have doubts about your bed, consult us before buying.
  • If you are looking to sink completely into a cloud-like sensation. A hybrid supports; if what you want is for the mattress to embrace you completely, you will feel the support of the springs.
  • If you are going to move it often. Hybrids weigh more than a foam-only mattress: if you change it from room to room every season, keep that in mind.
  • If you weigh more than 95 kg. It is not that the hybrid is not suitable, it is that you need a reinforced model: the mattress for people over 100 kg.
  • If it is for a child. An adult mattress with firm support is not the right choice; for ages 4 to 18 we have the Juvenil Lite, with medium firmness.

How to care for it so it lasts

  • Firm and flat base, the same size as the mattress: a upholstered base or a canapé. A worn-out box spring deforms any mattress.
  • Turn it head to foot every now and then, especially during the first year, to distribute wear.
  • Use a protector from day one, essential if the cover is not removable. The Tencel protector is waterproof and breathable; if you get warm, the FreshCool®. Both are washed at 30 °C maximum.
  • Ventilate the bed in the morning before making it.

If you buy a Morfeo mattress

Trial, warranty, and delivery

  • 100-night trial on the mattress, with no minimum: you can return it from day one.
  • 10-year warranty, which covers manufacturing defects.
  • Delivery in 3-7 business days on the mainland, with free shipping.
  • Free pickup if you return it: managed by Morfeo.

Made to order in our factory in Yecla (Murcia). The 100-night trial covers the mattress, not the other pieces in a pack.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid mattress?

A mattress with a pocket-sprung core and one or more memory foam, latex, or other foam comfort layers on top. The spring provides support, ventilation, and motion isolation; the foam, comfort and pressure distribution.

Is a hybrid mattress good?

For most people, yes: it combines the best of springs and foam. It is especially recommended for couples, for those who change positions, and for those who get a little warm. It is not the best option for those seeking a very soft feel.

What is the best hybrid mattress from Morfeo?

The Original Hybrid is the most popular: over 2000 pocket micro-springs, memory foam, firm support with comfort, and a cover washable at 30 °C. If you prefer a notch less firmness and a cooler fabric, the Altus has the same core with medium-firm support and natural linen.

Do hybrid mattresses get hot?

Less than a memory foam mattress on foam, because the spring core allows air to circulate. The final coolness depends on the top layer and the fabric. At Morfeo, the order of coolness is VisCool, then Altus, and then Nature.

What is the difference between a hybrid mattress and a memory foam one?

What is underneath. A memory foam mattress is usually a layer of memory foam on a foam block; a hybrid puts that layer on pocket springs. The hybrid ventilates better, responds faster when changing positions, and isolates movement more.

What firmness does a hybrid mattress have?

It depends on the model. At Morfeo, the Original Hybrid and the VisCool are firm, the Altus is medium-firm, and the Nature is medium.

Is a hybrid mattress suitable for an adjustable bed?

From the Morfeo range, the mattress for an adjustable bed is the Juvenil Lite, with an HR core. If you have doubts about your bed, consult us before buying.

What base does a hybrid mattress need?

A firm and flat base of the same size: upholstered base or canapé. If you use a slatted bed base, the slats should be close together and in good condition. Morfeo bases and canapés work with any mattress, whether from Morfeo or another brand.

The hybrid our customers choose most
