Colchón híbrido Morfeo sobre cama de madera: guía para elegir entre espuma, viscoelástica e híbrido

Memory foam or pocket-sprung mattress? Which is better

In short

If you can only keep one, keep the pocket-sprung mattress: it ventilates the mattress from the inside, does not transmit your partner's movement, and instantly regains its shape. Memory foam performs better as a comfort layer on top of those springs than as a whole mattress. That is why the answer we give at Morfeo is the hybrid: the Original Hybrid, with more than 2000 pocketed micro-springs and memory foam, is our most chosen mattress; and if you want the feel of memory foam without overheating, the VisCool is the coolest in the range.

What is better, a memory foam mattress or a pocket-sprung one?

The question is tricky, because it compares two things that do different jobs. Pocket-sprung mattresses are a core: the bottom structure that supports your weight. Memory foam is, almost always, a comfort layer: the top few inches that receive the body and distribute pressure.

When a store talks about a "memory foam mattress", it is usually a layer of memory foam on top of a block of foam. And when they talk about a "pocket-sprung mattress", it usually has some padding or foam on top. So the real choice is this:

  • What do you want underneath? A block of foam or a pocket-sprung core.
  • What do you want on top? A surface that wraps around you (memory foam), one that is more elastic (latex), or one that is more neutral.

If two people sleep together, you overheat, or you move around a lot at night, the pocket-sprung core starts with an advantage. If what you are looking for is the feeling of the mattress molding to your silhouette, that is what memory foam does. And if you want both, which is what happens to most people, the answer is a hybrid mattress.

What are pocket-sprung mattresses

They are metal springs put each in its own fabric pocket. In the traditional spring, they were all connected to each other, and when you rested your shoulder, half the bed moved. In a pocketed core, each spring compresses on its own: it goes down where there is weight and stays still where there isn't.

From that construction come its three features:

  • Bed independence. If your partner turns over or gets up in the middle of the night, the movement barely reaches your side.
  • Internal ventilation. Between spring and spring there is air. A block of foam is solid; a spring core, not.
  • Fast response. The spring regains its shape as soon as you remove the weight, so changing posture is effortless.

Micro-springs are smaller pocket-sprung springs. Being smaller, more fit in the same surface, and the support is distributed across more points. The Original Hybrid and the Altus have more than 2000 pocketed micro-springs. You can see all the models with this core in pocket-sprung mattresses.

Difference between a foam mattress and a memory foam one

It is the other big doubt, and the one that gives this guide its name. Both are foams, but they behave very differently:

  • Conventional or HR foam (high resilience) is elastic: you squeeze it and it immediately returns. It is used mainly as a core or as a support layer. It gives a feeling of uniform support.
  • Memory foam is sensitive to pressure and body heat. It softens little by little where you press and slowly regains its shape. It is the famous "memory effect": the mattress draws your silhouette and distributes the weight instead of concentrating it on the shoulder and hip.

That sensitivity to heat has a downside: classic memory foam tends to accumulate body temperature, and in a Spanish summer, it shows. That is why it matters so much what it has underneath. Memory foam on a block of closed-cell foam adds heat; memory foam on pocket-sprung mattresses has somewhere to ventilate.

Conventional / HR foam Memory foam
How it responds Fast, bounces Slow, molds
Where it is used Core or support layer Top comfort layer
Feeling Uniform support Wrapping, "picks you up"
Temperature Neutral Tends to retain heat if not ventilated

Comparison table: memory foam, pocket-sprung, and hybrid

We compare the three approaches with the criteria that really change how you sleep. We do not put grades or percentages: the result depends on each specific model, so what is useful is knowing where each technology leans.

Criterion Memory foam (memory foam on foam) Pocket-sprung mattresses Hybrid (memory foam on pocket-sprung mattresses)
Adaptability Very high: it molds to the silhouette By zones: each spring gives where there is weight High: the memory foam molds and the spring supports
Breathability and heat The weak point: the foam block does not ventilate High: air circulates between springs Good: the core ventilates what the memory foam heats
Bed independence Good: the foam absorbs movement Very good: each spring works alone Very good
Support and perceived durability Depends on the density of the block below Firm and stable if the core is of quality That of the spring core
Feeling when lying down You sink a little and it wraps around you It supports you, more reactive It receives you softly and supports you firmly
Changing posture It costs more: you have to "get out of the hole" Easy: the spring regains instantly Easy, if the memory foam layer is not excessive
It is right for you if… You sleep cold and look for a wrapping feeling You overheat or move around a lot You sleep as a couple or want the best of both

Advantages and disadvantages of each

Pocket-sprung mattresses: advantages

  • Bed independence: the criterion that is most noticeable when sleeping as a couple.
  • Ventilation: the core lets air and moisture pass.
  • Stable and reactive support, which facilitates changing posture.
  • They do not squeak: each spring is isolated in its pocket and does not rub against the one next to it.

Pocket-sprung mattresses: limits

  • Without a good comfort layer on top, the surface can be hard on the shoulder and hip.
  • They are heavier mattresses to move than a single foam one.
  • Not all cores are equal: the number of springs, their size, and whether there is edge reinforcement matter.

Memory foam: advantages

  • Distributes pressure: relieves the support points of those who sleep on their side.
  • Absorbs movement.
  • Gives that feeling of a "bed that picks you up" that many people look for.

Memory foam: disadvantages

  • Heat: classic memory foam retains body temperature.
  • Slow response: if you move around a lot, you may notice that it is hard to turn over.
  • Its quality depends on what it has underneath, and many product sheets do not say it.

Which one is right for you depending on how you sleep

If two people sleep together

Pocket-sprung or hybrid. If one has light sleep and the other moves, bed independence is the first thing that is appreciated. And if you weigh differently, the point-by-point support prevents the mattress from leaning towards the side of the heavier person. We develop it in the guide of the best mattress for couples.

If you overheat

Avoid memory foam on a foam block. What works is a spring core that ventilates and, if you want memory foam, that it is a version designed for heat. The VisCool combines a PCM (phase change) top fabric, which absorbs excess heat and releases it when you cool down, with open-cell foam on pocket-sprung mattresses. It is the coolest in the range; next is the Altus, with natural linen fabric.

If you sleep on your side

Shoulder and hip need to sink a little so that the spine is straight. Here a layer of memory foam helps, as long as the core underneath does not give with it. A hybrid solves it well.

If you sleep on your back or stomach

You are interested in the hip not sinking more than the rest. More spring support and a moderate comfort layer. If you expressly look for a firm feeling, look at the collection of firm mattresses.

If you move around a lot at night

Pocket-sprung without excessive memory foam. The quick response of the spring prevents the feeling of being trapped.

According to your weight

The more weight, the more the core works, and the more sense it makes that the support comes from the spring. All Morfeo mattresses are guaranteed up to 95 kg per person. If you go past that figure, the model that corresponds to you is the Morfeo XL Mattress, designed for more than 100 kg.

If your back hurts

A mattress does not treat any back problem: what it can do is not make it worse, leaving the spine aligned. If the pain persists, consult your doctor or physical therapist.

Why the hybrid is usually the best answer

A hybrid mattress combines a pocket-sprung core with comfort layers of memory foam or latex. Thus you add what each technology does well: the support, ventilation, and spring independence, and the welcoming and pressure distribution of the foam. It is the reason that, when they ask us "memory foam or springs?", our answer is almost always "both".

All our adult home mattresses have pocket-sprung mattresses in the core. What changes is the surface and the firmness:

Model Core and surface Firmness Cover Price

What to look for in the product sheet before buying

  1. What core it has. Pocket-sprung mattresses or foam block. It is what most conditions how the mattress ages and what many product sheets keep quiet when they say only "memory foam".
  2. How heat is solved. Open-cell foam, thermoregulating fabrics or a core that ventilates. A gel on the surface of a closed block is not enough.
  3. The declared firmness. And if the brand explains who each one is for. "Firm" or "medium" without more context says little.
  4. If the cover is removable and washable. With children, pets, or if you sweat a lot, it is a detail that is appreciated for years.
  5. The maximum guaranteed weight. If you are close to the limit, choose the model designed for your weight.
  6. The home trial and the warranty. A mattress is judged by sleeping for several weeks, not by lying down for two minutes in a store.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, a memory foam mattress or a pocket-sprung mattress?

It depends on how you sleep, but if you have to choose one, the pocket-sprung core: it ventilates better, transmits less movement, and instantly regains its shape. Memory foam performs better as a comfort layer on top of those springs. That is why we usually recommend a hybrid, like Morfeo's Original Hybrid.

What is the difference between a foam mattress and a memory foam mattress?

Conventional or HR foam is elastic: it bounces back immediately when you stop pressing on it and provides uniform support. Memory foam reacts to the pressure and heat of the body: it gradually adapts and slowly regains its shape. That is why it wraps you more, but also tends to retain more heat.

Do memory foam mattresses get hot?

Classic memory foam tends to retain body temperature, especially if it is on top of a block of closed-cell foam. This is corrected with open-cell foams, temperature-regulating fabrics, and a ventilating spring core. Morfeo's VisCool combines all three and is the coolest in the range.

Do pocket-sprung mattresses make noise?

They shouldn't. Each spring is isolated in its fabric pocket and does not rub against the one next to it, which is what made old spring mattresses squeak. If you notice noise, it usually comes from the base or the bed frame, not the mattress.

Which mattress is better if my partner and I weigh different amounts?

One with a pocket-sprung core. Since each spring compresses on its own, the mattress does not tilt towards the heavier side, and each person receives their own support. Keep in mind that Morfeo mattresses are guaranteed up to 95 kg per person; above that, the indicated model is the XL Mattress.

What is a hybrid mattress?

A mattress with a pocket-sprung core and memory foam or latex comfort layers on top. It combines the support, ventilation, and motion isolation of springs with the comfort of foam. At Morfeo, the Original Hybrid features over 2000 pocketed micro-springs and memory foam.

What is the difference between pocket springs and micro-springs?

Micro-springs are also pocketed, but they are smaller. Since more fit in the same surface, the support is distributed across more points. Morfeo's Original Hybrid and Altus feature over 2000 pocketed micro-springs.

What base does a pocket-sprung mattress need?

A firm, flat base the same size as the mattress, such as an upholstered base or a storage bed. If you use a slatted bed frame, the slats should be close together and in good condition: a sagging base shortens the life of a good mattress.

Don't choose between memory foam and springs

The Original Hybrid features both, and you have 100 nights to check at home if we got it right.
