Value-for-money memory foam mattress: how to choose a good one
Compartir
In short
A good memory foam mattress is not measured by its price or height, but by what lies beneath the memory foam and how it manages heat. The best value for money is found in a layer of memory foam over a pocket-sprung core, not on a block of foam. At Morfeo, if you want memory foam and a cool night's sleep, the VisCool is the coolest in the range; if you're looking for memory foam with high firmness at the best price, the Original Hybrid, our most popular mattress.

What is a memory foam mattress?
It is a mattress that has memory foam on its top. Memory foam is a foam that reacts to pressure and body heat: where you press, it gradually softens; where you don't, it stays firm. When you get up, it slowly regains its shape. This is the so-called "memory effect".
Its advantage is that it distributes weight. Instead of resting on three or four points (shoulder, hip, heels), the body rests on the entire surface. That's why side sleepers usually notice less pressure on their shoulder.
A detail that almost no store explains: a memory foam mattress is almost never made entirely of memory foam. Memory foam is the top few centimeters. Beneath it there is always something else, and that's what determines how well the mattress supports you and how many years it lasts.
How a memory foam mattress is made inside
From top to bottom, a memory foam mattress has four parts:
- Fabric or cover. What touches your skin. A technical or temperature-regulating fabric makes a big difference to how warm it feels. If it's removable and washable, even better.
- Memory foam layer. The layer that receives you and distributes pressure. Its thickness and type (conventional, open-cell, with vegetable oils) determine how enveloping and warm it will be.
- Transition layer. An intermediate foam that prevents you from feeling the core through the memory foam.
- Core. The support. It can be a block of foam (HR or conventional) or pocket springs. It is the most important part and the one that most salespeople keep quiet about.
| Memory foam on foam block | Memory foam on pocket springs (hybrid) | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Very enveloping, uniform | Receives you softly and supports you firmly |
| Heat | Traps more: the block does not ventilate | Air circulates between the springs |
| Changing posture | More difficult | Easier: the spring responds quickly |
| Bed independence | Good | Very good |
| Weight to move it | Lighter | Heavier |
In Morfeo's adult mattresses for home use, memory foam is always placed over pocket springs. If you want to learn more about that comparison, you can find it in memory foam or pocket-sprung mattresses: which is better.
Pros and cons of a memory foam mattress
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distributes pressure on shoulders and hips | Tends to retain body heat |
| Absorbs the other person's movement | Slow response: harder to turn over |
| Enveloping feel, like a "bed that embraces you" | Softer when warm and firmer when cold |
| Silent | Its quality depends on what lies beneath |
Heat: the major drawback, and how it's solved
It is the most common complaint and it is not a myth. Classic memory foam reacts to body heat and retains it, and you can feel it in a Spanish summer. There are three real ways to correct it, and ideally, a mattress should combine several:
- Open-cell foam, which allows air and moisture to pass through instead of trapping them.
- Phase-change materials (PCM) temperature-regulating fabrics, which absorb excess heat when your temperature rises and release it when it drops.
- A pocket-sprung core, which ventilates the mattress from the inside.
What solves almost nothing is a gel layer on the surface of a closed-cell foam block. If you tend to get hot, you have an entire guide on the coolest mattress for hot weather and the collection of cool mattresses.
Other common questions
- The new mattress smell. It is normal to notice a bit of an odor when unboxing a foam mattress. Ventilate the room and let it breathe without sheets for a few hours.
- Adjustment. If you are coming from a very different mattress, give it a few weeks before judging it. Your body needs to get used to it.
High, medium-high or medium firmness: what each means
Firmness is the feeling of support you notice when you lie down. It is not the same as quality or density: a foam can be very dense and still feel soft. It is also not a universal measure: the same mattress will feel firmer to someone who weighs less than to someone who weighs more.
| Firmness | What you notice | Usually suitable if… | At Morfeo |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | Supports you without you sinking in; memory foam softens the surface | You sleep on your back or stomach, you like to feel the bed is firm or you share a bed | Original Hybrid and VisCool |
| Medium-high | Stable support with a little more comfort | You change positions or want a firm middle ground | Altus (hybrid with natural linen) |
| Medium | Receives you softly and supports where your back needs it | You sleep on your side, weigh less or like the embracing effect | Nature (natural latex instead of memory foam) |
Two rules that help:
- Firmer is not necessarily better for your back. A mattress that is too hard leaves your waist suspended in the air; one that is too soft lets your hips sink. What you want is for your spine to remain straight. We explain it in what is better, a hard or soft mattress.
- If you weigh over 95 kg per person, firmness is not the issue: the Morfeo XL Mattress, designed for over 100 kg, is right for you. The rest of our mattresses are guaranteed up to 95 kg per person.
If your back hurts
A mattress does not cure or treat any back problems; at most, it can prevent them from getting worse and keep your spine aligned. If the pain persists, consult your doctor or physiotherapist.
How to choose a good memory foam mattress
Five filters, in order. If a mattress does not pass the first, there is no need to look at the rest.
- What lies beneath the memory foam. Pocket springs or a foam block. If the product page does not say, ask. This is what most affects support and durability.
- How it manages heat. Open-cell foam, temperature-regulating fabric, ventilating core. If you live in a warm area, this filter is almost as important as the first.
- How much memory foam it has and what type. A thicker layer gives a more enveloping feel, but also more heat and makes it harder to turn over. Be wary of a "memory foam layer" that does not state its thickness.
- Stated firmness and who it is for. According to your sleeping position and weight (table above).
- Home trial, warranty and cover. A mattress is judged after several weeks of sleeping on it. The warranty tells you how much the manufacturer trusts it; a washable cover tells you how long it will stay clean.
Warning signs on a product page
- It talks about "memory foam" but does not say what core it has.
- It promises to cure pain or cites studies without linking to them.
- It uses the total height as a quality argument without explaining the layers.
- It does not state up to what weight per person it is guaranteed.
And the size
Choose the size based on the bed you have, not the other way around. The most common sizes in Spain are 90x190, 135x190 and 150x190. If you are unsure, you have the guide to mattress sizes in Spain.
What value for money means in a memory foam mattress
Value for money is not the cheapest mattress. It is what you pay divided by the number of years it will last well. A cheap mattress that shows the imprint of your hips after a few years was not cheap.
That is why, when comparing prices, you should also compare:
- The core: memory foam on pocket springs versus memory foam on foam are not the same product, even if they are called the same.
- The warranty: how many years it lasts and what exactly it covers (for example, how many centimeters of sinking are covered).
- The home trial: how many nights, if there is a minimum, and who pays for the collection if you return it.
- What is included: shipping, collection, washable cover.
- Where it is made: making to order in Spain, as we do in Yecla, shortens lead times and avoids months in storage.
Memory foam mattress: how to read reviews
Reviews of memory foam mattresses can seem contradictory because they talk about both the mattress and the person writing them. The most common complaints and what they usually mean:
- "It gets hot." Almost always, memory foam on closed-cell foam or a hot person with a non-ventilated mattress.
- "I feel trapped." Too much memory foam for someone who moves around a lot; a hybrid would have suited them better.
- "I find it hard." Sometimes it is the wrong firmness for their weight; sometimes, it is just the first few weeks of adjustment.
- "It smelled at first." The smell of new foam, which goes away with ventilation.
Tip: look for reviews from people similar to you (weight, sleeping position, whether you sleep with a partner, whether you get hot) and who talk about weeks or months of use, not the first night.
Ours are all published, without filtering. As of September 25, 2026, there were 554 reviews with an average of 4.75 out of 5; by model, the Original Hybrid had 114 (4.81) and the VisCool 7 (4.43). You can read them in Morfeo customer reviews.
What memory foam mattress we recommend at Morfeo
We will be clear: in our adult range for home use, there are no memory foam mattresses on a foam block. When we use memory foam, it is placed over pocket springs, because this makes the most of what it does well (receiving you and distributing pressure) and compensates for what it does poorly (heat and slow response).
| Model | What it has | Firmness | Coolness | Cover | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VisCool | VisCool® foam with soybean oil, PCM fabric and pocket springs | High | The coolest in the range | Removable (not machine washable) | See price |
| Original Hybrid | Memory foam over more than 2000 pocket micro-springs | High, with comfort | Just behind the VisCool and the Altus | Removable, washable at 30 °C | See price |
VisCool
For those who want the feel of memory foam and wake up hot. Its PCM fabric absorbs excess heat and releases it when your temperature drops, and the open-cell foam sits over pocket springs.
Original Hybrid
Memory foam with high firmness and the lowest price of the two. More than 2000 micro-springs, bed independence for sleeping with a partner and a washable cover. Our most popular mattress.
You can see all the memory foam models in the memory foam mattresses collection. And to extend the life of any of them, a protector from day one: the FreshCool® if you get hot (wash at 30 °C maximum).

Frequently asked questions
What is the best value-for-money memory foam mattress?
The one that places memory foam over a pocket-sprung core, manages heat and has a long home trial and warranty. At Morfeo, the Original Hybrid is the best-priced option and the VisCool, the coolest.
What is a memory foam mattress?
A mattress with a top layer of memory foam, a material that gradually adapts to the pressure and heat of the body and slowly regains its shape. It distributes weight and absorbs movement. Beneath it always lies another core, made of foam or pocket springs.
Do memory foam mattresses retain heat?
Classic memory foam tends to retain heat, especially over a block of closed-cell foam. This is corrected with open-cell foam, temperature-regulating fabrics, and a ventilated spring core. Morfeo's VisCool combines all three.
What firmness of memory foam mattress should I choose?
It depends on your sleeping position and weight. Firm if you sleep on your back or stomach or like to feel the bed firm; medium-firm if you change positions; medium if you sleep on your side or weigh less. If you weigh more than 95 kg, a reinforced mattress like the Morfeo XL is right for you.
Is a memory foam mattress good for couples?
Yes, because it absorbs movement. Even better if it has pocket springs: each spring works independently, and if you weigh different amounts, the mattress won't tilt to one side.
How long does a memory foam mattress last?
It depends mainly on the core underneath, usage, and how well you protect it. A good reference is the warranty: at Morfeo it is 10 years and covers manufacturing defects.
Is it normal for a new memory foam mattress to have an odor?
Yes, it is common to notice a new foam smell when unboxing it. Ventilate the room and leave the mattress without sheets for a few hours.
What is the difference between a memory foam mattress and a hybrid one?
A hybrid places memory foam (or latex) over a pocket spring core, instead of over a block of foam. It ventilates better, responds faster when changing positions, and isolates movement more effectively.
Memory foam, but cool
The VisCool is the coolest in our range. If you are looking for the best price, choose the Original Hybrid. Both come with a 100-night trial.
