Cómo elegir colchón en 6 pasos: tipos, firmeza y medidas

How to choose a mattress in 6 steps: types, firmness, and sizes

In short

When choosing a mattress, decide in this order: size, sleeping position, weight, material, firmness, and purchasing terms. If you sleep with a partner or have no special needs, a hybrid with pocket springs, memory foam, and high firmness, such as Morfeo's Original Hybrid, is the safest starting point. If you get hot, look at the VisCool; if you weigh more than 95 kg, the XL Mattress.

A mattress is not chosen by brand or by the "best" label. It is chosen by who is going to sleep on it. These six steps take you from what is non-negotiable (the size of your bed, your weight) to what is more personal (the firmness you like). At the end, you have a selector that tells you which Morfeo model is right for you.

Step 1. What mattress size do you need?

Start with what you already have: the mattress must match the base, bed frame, or storage bed. If you are also going to change the bed, then you can choose the size freely. The most common in Spain are these:

Size Usually for
80x200 A tall person, or two twin beds that together form a 160x200
90x190 One person, single or youth bed
135x190 One person with space or a couple in a small bedroom
140x200 A couple in a small bedroom if one of the two is tall: 10 cm longer than the 135x190
150x190 The most common couple size
160x200 A couple that wants more width and length
180x200 A couple that wants extra space, or that sleeps with small children
200x200 The largest bed we make: one meter wide for each person

If you are tall, look at the length before the width: in addition to the 200 cm, the Original Hybrid and the Altus are also made in 160x210. You have all the sizes and how they fit with each type of bed in the mattress sizes in Spain guide.

Step 2. How do you sleep?

Your position determines how much the mattress surface needs to let you sink in so that your spine remains straight:

  • On your side. The shoulder and hip are the points that apply the most pressure. You need a comfort layer that lets them sink in a little without the waist sagging. A medium or medium-high firmness usually works well.
  • On your back. The key is that the lumbar area does not end up in the air or the hip sinks. Medium-high or high firmness.
  • On your stomach. If the hip sinks, the lumbar area arches. It requires a firm mattress and a low pillow.
  • You change positions. You are interested in a mattress that does not "trap" you: pocket springs and latex respond faster than pure memory foam.

If you sleep with a partner, add a criterion: bed independence, which is the little you notice when the other moves. Pocket springs win there, because each spring works separately.

Step 3. Your weight matters

It is the criterion that does not allow nuances. With more weight, the core compresses more: a mattress that is firm for a 60 kg person may fall short with 100 kg. That is why it is advisable to look at two things in any mattress: what weight it is guaranteed for and if the firmness is designed for yours.

The weight rule at Morfeo

All Morfeo mattresses are guaranteed up to 95 kg per person. If you weigh more, the one that corresponds to you is the XL Mattress, designed for people over 100 kg, with pocket springs and high-density foam in a reinforced structure. If you sleep with a partner and only one of the two exceeds that weight, the mattress must also be the XL.

And do not forget about support: a mattress for more weight needs a base that can support it. The Samos and Naxos bases and the Morfeo storage beds support more than 100 kg per person.

Step 4. What types of mattresses are there and which one is right for you?

This is where the purchase gets most complicated, because every store gives its materials a different name. In reality, almost all the mattresses you will see come down to five types:

Type How it works Pros To consider Fits with
Memory foam Foam that softens with heat and body pressure and adapts to its shape Relieves pressure points; does not transmit movement Retains more heat; takes time to recover its shape when you move Those who sleep on their side and seek comfort, and do not get hot
Pocket springs Each spring is inside its own fabric bag and works independently Point-by-point support, bed independence, air circulates Needs comfort layers on top so as not to feel hard Couples, hot sleepers, those who want firmness
Hybrid Pocket spring core with layers of memory foam, latex, or other foams on top Combines the support and ventilation of the spring with the comfort of the foam Taller and heavier than a foam one Most profiles, especially couples
Latex Natural (or synthetic) elastic foam that adapts and recovers its shape quickly Elastic, breathable, good response when changing position Usually more expensive; it is advisable to check if it is natural Those who seek natural materials and a cozy feel
HR foam High resilience (HR, high resilience) polyurethane foam: it deforms and recovers its shape immediately Light, quiet, usually more affordable Ventilates less than a spring core Youth beds, bunk beds, guest mattresses, tight budgets

Traditional springs (biconical or continuous) still exist: the springs are connected to each other, so they transmit more movement than pocket springs. And water mattresses, which had their time, need a vinyl chamber and a system that heats the water; today hybrids and memory foam solve them better, which adapt and support without that maintenance.

Are you torn between the two best sellers? We explain it to you in depth in memory foam or pocket springs: differences. And if you are attracted to natural, in the natural latex mattresses guide.

What type of mattress is each Morfeo model

Five of our six mattresses have a pocket spring core and change the top layers; the sixth, the youth one, is HR foam.

  • Original Hybrid: more than 2,000 pocket micro-springs + memory foam. High firmness with comfort.
  • Altus: the same core with linen outer fabric. Medium-high firmness.
  • VisCool: VisCool memory foam and PCM thermoregulating fabric on pocket springs. High firmness, the coolest of the range.
  • Nature: pocket springs, natural latex, and organic cotton topper. Medium firmness.
  • XL Mattress: reinforced pocket springs and high-density foam, for more than 95 kg.
  • Youth Lite: high-density HR foam with 4 cm of Visco Airscape. Medium firmness, from 4 to 18 years.

Does density matter?

Density is the weight of a foam per cubic meter (kg/m³). It is useful data, but with two conditions: it serves to compare foams of the same type with each other (one memory foam with another memory foam) and it does not measure firmness, but the amount of material. At the same type, more density usually means that the foam withstands the passage of years better. In a spring mattress, the density of the foam layers counts, but the support is given by the springs.

One side or two?

Almost all current multi-layer mattresses are single-sided: the comfort layers go on top and the base is designed to support, so they are not flipped, only turned from head to foot every now and then to distribute wear. The two-sided ones allow them to be flipped. None is better by definition; what matters is to follow the care instructions of the model you buy.

Step 5. Hard or soft? Adjust the firmness

Firmness is not synonymous with quality or health: it is the sensation of support that the mattress gives. What you are looking for is that, lying down, the spine remains more or less straight, like when you are standing up. A mattress that is too soft lets the hip fall; one that is too hard loads the shoulders and hips.

Firmness Usually fits with At Morfeo
Medium Low-weight people, those who sleep on their side and seek comfort Nature, Youth Lite
Medium-high Most adults, on their side or on their back Altus
High On their back or on their stomach, those who prefer to feel the mattress firm Original Hybrid, VisCool
Reinforced high More than 95 kg XL Mattress

If you come from a very soft mattress, count on a few days of adaptation. You have the complete explanation in what is better, hard or soft mattress, and all the high firmness models in the collection of firm mattresses. If you have back pain, the mattress can help you maintain a good posture, but it is not a treatment: if the pain persists, consult your doctor or physical therapist.

Step 6. Review the purchasing terms

Choosing the mattress well is half. The other half is being able to rectify if you don't get it right. Before paying, compare this:

Before paying

What you need to be clear about

  • Home trial: how many nights and if there is a minimum before you can return it.
  • Warranty: how many years and from how many centimeters of sinking it covers.
  • Maximum weight: up to how many kilos per person is it guaranteed.
  • Cover: if it comes off and how it is washed.
  • Term and shipping: how many days it takes and if shipping is included.
  • Return: who pays for the pickup if it does not convince you.

In Morfeo mattresses: 100 nights of trial without a minimum, 10 years of warranty (manufacturing defects), 95 kg per person (more: XL Mattress), delivery in 3-7 business days with free shipping in the peninsula, free pickup if you return it and manufacturing on demand in Yecla (Murcia).

And if you prefer to split the payment, Morfeo mattresses can be paid in 3 interest-free installments with Klarna or in 4 with Alma, at the same price you see on the web. We explain it to you in mattresses in interest-free installments.

If you want to compare models with these criteria, in the best Morfeo mattresses in 2026 by sleeper type and budget you have the complete table with prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which type of mattress is best?

No single type is best for everyone. Pocket springs provide point-by-point support, motion isolation, and good ventilation; memory foam relieves pressure and adapts to the body, but retains more heat; latex is elastic and recovers quickly; HR foam is lightweight and usually more affordable. Hybrid mattresses combine a pocket-spring core with memory foam or latex layers, and they are the option that suits the most people.

Which mattress should I buy if I sleep on my side?

One that allows the shoulder and hip to sink in slightly without the waist sagging: medium or medium-firm support with a good comfort layer. At Morfeo, the Altus (medium-firm) or the Nature (medium).

What mattress firmness do I need?

It depends mainly on your weight and sleeping position. The heavier you are, the firmer support you need to prevent your hips from sinking; for side sleepers, a little surface comfort usually works best, while firm mattresses are better for stomach sleepers. Rather than looking at a number on a scale, make sure your spine stays straight, as it does when you are standing.

What is mattress density and which should I choose?

Density is the weight of foam per cubic metre (kg/m³). It is useful for comparing foams of the same type: with the same material, higher density usually means greater durability. It does not measure firmness and does not apply to springs, so do not compare the density of memory foam with that of HR foam.

Is a single-sided or double-sided mattress better?

Today, most multi-layer mattresses are single-sided: the comfort layers are on top and do not need to be turned over, only rotated from head to foot occasionally. Double-sided mattresses can be flipped to distribute wear. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the model you buy.

What mattress size do I need for two people?

For two adults, the most common size in Spain is 150x190; if you have the space, 160x200 gives you more width and length. The mattress must match the size of the base, bed frame, or storage bed you plan to use.

Is it worth buying a mattress online without trying it?

Yes, if the store lets you try it at home with clear terms. Check how many trial nights you have, if there is a minimum period before you can return it, and who pays for collection. At Morfeo, you get 100 nights with no minimum period, and returns are collected free of charge.

Now you know what to look for

If you are still unsure, start with the Original Hybrid: it is the most popular choice, and you have 100 nights to check if we got it right for your bed.
