Natural latex mattress: what it is, benefits and who it is for
Compartir
In short
A natural latex mattress uses foam made from the sap of the rubber tree, not petroleum derivatives like synthetic latex. It is elastic, instantly regains its shape, and doesn't leave you feeling "sunken" like memory foam; in return, it is heavier and more expensive. At Morfeo, the answer is the Nature Mattress: natural latex and organic cotton on pocket springs, medium firmness, made in Yecla.

What is a natural latex mattress?
Natural latex is the white sap extracted from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Beaten, molded and vulcanized, it becomes an open-cell foam that is flexible and highly elastic. That foam is what goes inside the mattress.
There are two ways to use it:
- Latex block. The entire core is latex. It is the heaviest version and contains the most material.
- Latex as a comfort layer. The latex is on top, over a pocket spring core or another foam. You keep the feel of latex and gain ventilation and more stable support. This is what the Nature Mattress does.
What defines the feel of latex is its elastic response: it gives where you press and immediately returns to its shape. When you lie down, you notice that it supports you and that you can turn over effortlessly, instead of being enveloped.
Natural, synthetic or blended latex: how to tell them apart
"Latex" on a label does not mean the same thing for all brands. There are three different things on the market under the same word:
| Natural latex | Synthetic latex | Blend | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it comes from | Sap from the rubber tree | Petroleum derivatives (usually styrene-butadiene rubber) | Part natural and part synthetic, in varying proportions |
| Feel | Very elastic, recovers quickly | Slightly less elastic | Depends on the proportion |
| Price | Highest | Lowest | Intermediate |
| What to look for | That the product sheet says "natural" and, if it is sold as organic, the certificate | That it is not sold as natural | That it indicates which part is natural |
Three questions to ask before buying:
- Is it natural, synthetic or blended latex? If the product sheet only says "latex", ask.
- Where is the latex located? A solid block is not the same as a comfort layer. Neither option is worse, but they differ in price, weight, and feel.
- What does the seal certify? GOLS refers to latex of organic origin. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 guarantees that the materials have been tested and are free from harmful substances, but it says nothing about whether the latex is natural or organic.
Dunlop or Talalay: what changes
These are the two processes used to make latex foam. They are not brands.
- Dunlop. The latex is beaten, poured into the mold, and vulcanized. It produces a denser and more compact foam, with a firmer feel.
- Talalay. It adds two steps: vacuuming and freezing before vulcanizing. The foam is more uniform and airy, with a softer feel. It is a more expensive process.
In practice, the process matters less than the overall construction of the mattress: the thickness of the layer, what is underneath, and the surface padding change the final feel much more.
Pros and cons of natural latex
Elasticity and freedom of movement
It adapts to shoulders and hips without trapping you. If you change positions during the night, you can turn over easily.
Material of natural origin
It is the option for those who prefer natural materials over petroleum-derived foams.
Stable response
Its open cells instantly regain their shape, without the slow feel of some memory foams.
Higher price
Natural latex costs more to produce than synthetic foams, and that is reflected in the price.
It weighs more
A mattress with a lot of latex is harder to move or turn. With latex only in the comfort layer, the difference is smaller.
It is not the coolest in our range
Latex breathes better than classic memory foam, but at Morfeo, VisCool and Altus are cooler than Nature.
If you have a latex allergy
Natural latex contains proteins that can cause a reaction in allergic people. If you have a diagnosed latex allergy, consult your doctor before buying a mattress that contains it, even if it is inside and covered by fabric.
Latex mattress or memory foam? And where the hybrid fits in
This is the most common question. Both materials adapt to the body, but in opposite ways: latex pushes you back; memory foam gives slowly and envelops you. The hybrid combines a pocket spring core with layers of foam or latex on top.
| Latex | Memory foam | Hybrid (pocket springs + layers) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Elastic, you "float" on it | Enveloping, it molds slowly | Spring support with the comfort of the top layer |
| Changing positions | Easy | It takes a little more effort | Easy |
| Heat | Breathes better than classic memory foam | Classic tends to accumulate heat; treated ones reduce it | The spring core allows air to circulate |
| Mattress weight | Heavy if it is a block | Medium | Medium-heavy |
| It is right for you if | You move a lot and want natural materials | You like to feel embraced and relieve pressure | You want firm support, ventilation, and good bed independence |
| At Morfeo | Nature (latex on springs) | VisCool (memory foam on springs) | Original Hybrid and Altus |
As you can see, at Morfeo all adult mattresses for home use feature a pocket spring core. What changes is the comfort layer: natural latex in the Nature, memory foam in the Original Hybrid and VisCool. If you want to learn more, check out the guide to the best hybrid mattresses.
Who is a natural latex mattress for (and who isn't)?
It is right for you if…
- You change positions often and do not want to feel trapped.
- You prefer natural materials for what you touch every night.
- You are looking for a cozy feel, medium firmness, without losing back support.
Look at another option if…
- You weigh more than 95 kg. All our mattresses are guaranteed up to 95 kg per person. Above that, the right one for you is the Morfeo XL Mattress, designed for more than 100 kg.
- You get very hot. In our range, VisCool and Altus are cooler than Nature.
- You want a washable cover. The Nature does not have a removable cover; the Original Hybrid does, washable at 30 °C.
- You prefer a firmer mattress. The Nature is medium firmness. If you are looking for more firmness, check out the firm or soft mattress guide.
How much does a natural latex mattress cost?
There is no single reference price, because very different mattresses are sold under "latex". What drives the price, from highest to lowest:
- Natural or synthetic. Natural is more expensive; blends fall in between.
- How much latex it contains. A solid block contains much more material than a comfort layer.
- The process. Talalay usually costs more than Dunlop.
- The rest of the construction. Core, padding, fabric, and certifications.
- The size. A 150x190 does not cost the same as a 90x190.
A practical tip: compare the price per size and look at the same things on each product sheet (type of latex, where it is located, warranty, and trial period). A cheap latex mattress is usually cheap because it contains little latex or because it is synthetic.
The price of the Nature Mattress in each size is updated on its product sheet. You can find them all in the Morfeo latex mattress collection.
Is a natural latex mattress an eco-friendly mattress?
"Eco-friendly" is not a regulated category for mattresses, so it is best to look at concrete facts and not the word:
- Origin of the materials. Natural latex and organic cotton versus petroleum-derived foams.
- Certificates you can check. GOLS for organic latex; OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the absence of harmful substances.
- Where it is made. A mattress made in Spain travels fewer kilometers to your home than an imported one.
- How long it lasts. The most sustainable mattress is the one you do not have to replace soon. A breathable protector from day one helps preserve it.
At Morfeo, we make the entire catalog to order in our factory in Yecla (Murcia): the mattress is made when you order it, without stock waiting in a warehouse. We explain this in the guide to mattresses made in Spain. And if you want to complete the bed with natural fibers, the EcoPercal sheets are made of certified organic percale cotton (OCS and OEKO-TEX).
The Morfeo Nature Mattress: natural latex on pocket springs
The coziest in our range: soft when you lie down and firm where your back needs it. 32 cm, the tallest at Morfeo.
This is how it is made, according to its product sheet:
- Pocket springs for support. They work separately, so you notice your partner's movements much less.
- Natural latex that adapts to the body.
- Integrated organic cotton topper on the surface.
- OEKO-TEX Class 1 outer fabric, hypoallergenic.
- Reinforced edges: you can sit on the side without it sinking.
- Medium firmness with an embracing effect.
- No removable cover. The topper is integrated, which is why we recommend a breathable Tencel protector from day one.
As of 25/09/2026, the Nature has 15 reviews with an average of 4.80/5. You can read them on the Morfeo customer reviews page.

Frequently asked questions
What is better, a latex mattress or a memory foam one?
It depends on how you want the mattress to feel. Latex is elastic: it supports you, instantly regains its shape, and lets you change positions easily. Memory foam gives slowly and envelops you, and classic memory foam tends to accumulate more heat. If you move a lot and prefer natural materials, latex is a better fit; if you like to feel embraced, memory foam.
Does a natural latex mattress get hot?
Natural latex breathes better than classic memory foam thanks to its open cells, but it is not the coolest material. In the Morfeo range, the order of coolness is VisCool, then Altus, and then Nature. If heat is your priority, look at VisCool first.
How much does a natural latex mattress cost?
It varies greatly depending on whether it is natural or synthetic, how much latex it contains, the process (Dunlop or Talalay), and the size. The price of the Morfeo Nature Mattress in each size is on its product sheet.
How do I know if a mattress is made of 100% natural latex?
Check the product specifications: they should state whether the latex is natural, synthetic, or a blend, and where it is used (as a solid block or a comfort layer). If it is marketed as organic latex, ask for the GOLS certificate. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label indicates that the materials are free from harmful substances, but not that the latex is natural.
Is the Morfeo Nature Mattress made entirely of latex?
It is not a solid block of latex. It combines pocket springs for support, natural latex that adapts to the body, and an organic cotton topper integrated into the surface. It has medium firmness, is 32 cm high, and does not come with a removable cover.
Can I sleep on a latex mattress if I have a latex allergy?
Natural latex contains proteins that can cause a reaction in people with allergies. If you have a diagnosed latex allergy, consult your doctor before buying a mattress that contains it.
Which latex mattress should I choose if I weigh more than 95 kg?
All Morfeo mattresses, including the Nature, are guaranteed for up to 95 kg per person. If you weigh more, the right model for you is the Morfeo XL Mattress, designed for people over 100 kg.
