Queen and king beds: their equivalents in Spanish measurements

Quick answer
Queen and king beds are not made in Spain. They are American sizes, and the closest equivalents here are: queen → 150 × 190 or 150 × 200 cm, and king → 180 × 200 cm. They are not identical —the American queen measures 152 × 203 cm— and that is why queen sheets do not fit well on a Spanish 150 bed. If you have seen a size in inches or on a foreign website, below you will find the table with the exact equivalent and what to order here.
In this guide
"Queen bed" and "king bed" are American market names that have spread throughout Latin America and appear mainly in Spain in hotels, on international websites, and in TV shows. Here, beds are named by their width in centimeters: 90, 105, 135, 150, 160, 180. This guide translates one to the other without generous rounding.
Equivalence table
| International name | Original size | Equivalent in Spain | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin (single) | 99 × 191 cm | 90 × 190 cm | 9 cm narrower here |
| Twin XL | 99 × 203 cm | 90 × 200 cm | Almost identical |
| Full or Double | 137 × 191 cm | 135 × 190 cm | Practically the same |
| Queen | 152 × 203 cm | 150 × 200 cm | 2 cm narrower, 3 cm shorter |
| King | 193 × 203 cm | 180 × 200 cm | 13 cm narrower here |
| California King | 183 × 213 cm | 180 × 200 cm | 13 cm shorter |
| Super King (United Kingdom) | 180 × 200 cm | 180 × 200 cm | Identical |
American sizes are given in inches and vary by a couple of centimeters depending on the manufacturer. Spanish sizes are standardized.
What size to order if buying in Spain
The practical rule: queen is our 150 and king is our 180. And there is an intermediate size that does not exist in the United States but does here, the 160, which makes the most sense when the 150 is too small but there is no room for a 180.
The Spanish "queen"
75 cm per person. It is the best-selling double bed size in Spain today and the one that replaces the long-time 135.
The middle ground
80 cm per person. It has no American equivalent and is the best space-to-comfort ratio if the bedroom is small.
The Spanish "king"
90 cm per person, the same as a single bed for each person. It needs a bedroom that is at least 3 meters wide.
And the length: the Spanish standard is 190 cm, and 200 cm if either of you is taller than 1.85 m. The rule is to leave 15-20 cm above your height.
The sheet dilemma
This is the real problem with mixing systems. Queen sheets are not suitable for a Spanish 150 bed: there are 2 cm extra in width and 3 in length, so the fitted sheet wrinkles and the top sheet is too short if the mattress is high. The same thing happens the other way around.
If you are going to buy bedding, always order it by the size in centimeters of your mattress, not by the name. And keep the height in mind: a 30 cm mattress needs a deep pocket fitted sheet, which is where most standard sets fail.
Will it fit in your bedroom?
The calculation is simple: bed width + 60 cm on each side you want to walk past. Anything less than that and the bedroom becomes a hallway.
| Bed | Walking past one side | Walking past both sides |
|---|---|---|
| 135 cm | 1.95 m wide | 2.55 m |
| 150 cm | 2.10 m | 2.70 m |
| 160 cm | 2.20 m | 2.80 m |
| 180 cm (king) | 2.40 m | 3.00 m |

How wide is your bedroom?
The direct equivalent of the queen, and it fits with room to spare: it needs 2.10 m to walk past one side and 2.70 m for both. With a length of 190 cm, or 200 if either of you is taller than 1.85 m.
A Spanish king (180 cm) needs 3 meters of width to be able to walk past both sides. With less, the 160 gives you 80 cm per person without turning the bedroom into a hallway.
The American full and the Spanish 135 are practically the same bed. If you sleep together, consider upgrading to 150: it is 7.5 cm more per person and it shows.
You have extra room for the queen equivalent. With 3 meters of width, a 160 fits, which gives 80 cm per person: the jump that you really notice when you sleep together.
You have room for the Spanish king: 90 cm per person, the same as a single bed for each person. Here it is only made with a length of 200 cm.
The full is equivalent to our 135, but with 3 meters of width you are wasting the bedroom: a 150 or a 160 fit without a problem and change the rest in a couple.
All our sizes are made in Yecla (Murcia), from 80 to 200 cm wide, and are tested for 100 nights at home.
If you change size, the base also changes: a 150 mattress on a 135 base will sag at the edges and lose the warranty.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a queen size bed?
152 × 203 cm in its original American size. That size is not made in Spain: the equivalent is 150 × 190 cm or 150 × 200 cm depending on your height.
How big is a king size bed?
193 × 203 cm the American, and 180 × 200 cm the British super king. In Spain the equivalent is 180 × 200 cm, which is 13 cm narrower than the American king.
Which is bigger, queen or king?
The king. It is about 40 cm wider: 20 cm more per person. In Spanish sizes, the difference is between a 150 bed and a 180.
Are queen sheets suitable for a 150 bed?
They fit poorly. The queen measures 2 cm wider and 3 cm longer, so the fitted sheet wrinkles and the top sheet is too short if the mattress is high. Buy the bedding by the size in centimeters of your mattress.
Can you buy a queen or king bed in Spain?
As a special size yes, but it is expensive and then the problem is the bedding, which you will have to bring from abroad every time. The practical thing is to stick to the standardized Spanish sizes: 150, 160, or 180.
What room does a 180 bed need?
Three meters wide if you want to walk past both sides: 180 cm of bed plus 60 cm on each side. With less space, a 160 is more comfortable in everyday life.
