What mattresses do hotels use and why are they so comfortable

Short answer
Most hotels use pocket-sprung (or hybrid spring and memory foam) mattresses in double rooms and high-density foam mattresses where there is high turnover and single beds. They usually measure between 25 and 32 cm, have medium or medium-firm firmness to suit almost any guest, and always come with a protector. The "hotel bed" feel comes from that mattress, but also from the base, the bedding, and the room.
The types of mattresses used in hotels
Pocket-sprung or hybrid
It is the most common in double rooms. Each spring is in its own pocket and works separately, so when one guest moves, the other hardly notices (what is called bed independence). On top, it usually has layers of memory foam or comfort foams. In our range, it is the H SAC, the mattress that hotels ask us for the most.
High-density foam
It is widely used in hostels, holiday apartments, and rooms with single beds. It is firm, noiseless, weighs less than a spring mattress, and withstands high turnover well. At Morfeo, it is the H Compact, the one chosen by Gaia Rooms for their Barcelona apartments.
Premium multi-zone
In superior rooms and 4 and 5-star hotels, taller mattresses appear, with zoned pocket springs and natural fiber tops. This is the case of the ProSuite: 7-zone spring, cashmere and cotton top, and 32 cm height.
Height and firmness: why almost all are similar
A hotel does not choose a mattress for one person, but for thousands. That is why it looks for a medium or medium-firm firmness, which supports most bodies and postures well without being hard, and a height of 25 cm or more, which gives a solid bed feel and fits hospitality fitted sheets and protectors. Many are double-sided: they are flipped every few months to distribute wear.
Why you sleep so well in a hotel
The mattress is the foundation, but the hotel bed feel is the sum of several things:
- A mattress in good condition. Well-maintained hotels flip, rotate, and renew their mattresses; at home we usually put up with a worn-out one for much longer.
- A high and firm base. Hotel upholstered bases, about 30 cm high, lift the bed and do not sag.
- Quality protector and bedding. Well-taut sheets, light duvet, and a protector that does not make you hot.
- Several pillows. They allow each guest to find their height.
- The room. Darkness, silence, and controlled temperature do as much as the mattress.
If you have a hotel or a holiday apartment
Choose the type of mattress according to your rooms: pocket-sprung for doubles, high-density foam for singles and high turnover, and a premium model for your best rooms. Ask for the technical sheet, fireproof fabric, and protector from day one. We tell you step by step in our guide to choosing a hotel mattress.
If you want the hotel feel at home
Look for a hybrid pocket-sprung mattress with medium-firm firmness, like the Altus, put it on a high base like the Samos upholstered base, which has the height of a hotel bed, and protect it with a good breathable protector. If you are undecided between models, you have them all in our mattress comparison.
