I talk at night. Why does it happen to me?

Talking in your sleep is something that happens to more people than we think. The truth is that, although it is usually an isolated case, some people suffer from it every day. Talking in your sleep, also known as somniloquy, is a Sleep Disorder. This type of disorder involves someone talking in a different voice or language, in full sentences or gibberish, while they sleep. The most characteristic thing is that the speaker remembers none of it upon waking, while the person sleeping next to them does.

One of the main causes and triggers of these conversations in dreams is usually stress and a lack of good rest. It usually improves with good sleep habits and, if it is very frequent, it is advisable to consult a sleep specialist.

At Morfeo, we want to give you some tips to stop talking in your sleep. Take note!

Talking in your sleep: tips to stop

The most important thing is to have good sleep hygiene, as a good night’s rest is synonymous with health and well-being. With a good rest routine we can reduce our nighttime conversations. Here are some more tips:

1. Make sure you get enough sleep

Often, most sleep problems are caused by not getting enough rest. Sleep deprivation can cause us to talk during the night. If you talk in your sleep and do not get the 7–9 hours recommended for adults each night, it is necessary to rethink our sleep schedule to improve our rest.

Staying up late, going to bed later than usual, exposure to devices or screens at night… These are factors that do not promote rest.

We should establish a sleep schedule as part of our rest routine and stick to it every day.

2. Limit your consumption of stimulating drinks

Consuming caffeine or alcohol at certain times can interfere with falling asleep and our rest. Caffeinated drinks act as stimulants that make it difficult to rest. Alcohol can constantly disrupt our rest, causing us to wake up frequently during the night.

But alcohol can also make us talk during the night. To avoid this, it is recommended to avoid consuming caffeine after 2:00 p.m. and to avoid alcohol.

3. Relaxation

Stress is another factor that can not only impair the quality of our rest but also be one of the causes of talking in your sleep.

Creating a relaxation routine before going to bed is essential to release the tension accumulated throughout the day and fall asleep more easily. To do this, you should limit the use of technology, exposure to screens, etc.

Finding a quiet place, such as the bedroom, listening to some relaxing music, doing some yoga exercises, or meditating can promote relaxation and rest. Relaxing the mind and body prevents talking in your sleep and improves the quality of our sleep.

4. Keep a sleep diary and routine

To assess the quality of our rest, it is recommended to keep a small sleep diary so that we can record and note the nights when we have not slept well. To do this, we should note the time we go to bed, the time we wake up, our food and drink consumption, the activity we performed, and whether our sleep was disturbed during the night. This way, we can analyze and identify what helps or hinders our rest. Thus avoiding talking in your sleep.

Somniloquy flares up when your rest was already disrupted

Talking in your sleep appears especially on nights of fragmented sleep. Before looking for remedies, it is worth ruling out the obvious: if you wake up several times without knowing why, the mattress or the temperature is usually to blame.

How can we tell if we talk in our sleep?

Normally, the person who talks in their sleep does not remember it the next morning, and most of the time they are not even aware they are doing it. They usually find out from the people who sleep next to them or who have heard them talking while they were asleep. There are three types of people who talk in their sleep: those who talk once a month (mild), those who usually talk once a week (moderate), and those who talk every day (severe).

The main symptoms are noises or sounds, speech, and expressions while falling asleep. Other symptoms that can occur in people who talk in their sleep include sleepwalking, night terrors, or sleep behavior disorders.

Talking in your sleep is something that can happen to both adults and children and does not appear to be a serious problem. Talking in your sleep can happen during any stage of sleep; when it occurs during the light sleep stages, what the speaker says is usually more understandable.

In deep sleep, however, what is said is usually practically incomprehensible.

There is no specific treatment to stop talking in your sleep; normally, it can be resolved with proper sleep habits and routines.

If this is not the case, you should not worry, as it is not considered a medical problem. Only in cases where it is associated with a sleep disorder or other problems should you consult a sleep specialist.
