Bedbug stains on the mattress: how to tell if they are

Quick answer

Bed bugs leave a very specific trail: tiny black dots, one to two millimeters in size, concentrated on the seams, labels, and the mattress piping, plus an occasional isolated reddish mark from a crushed bed bug. If your stain is yellow, diffuse, and large, and is right where you rest your shoulders and hips, it's not bed bugs: it's sweat. And if it has a defined brown ring, it's urine or a spilled liquid. In this guide, we give you the cloth test to clear up any doubts in thirty seconds, the cleaning method for each stain, and what can really be prevented with a protector.

The five stains that appear on a mattress

Almost everything that appears on a mattress falls into five categories. The color, the shape of the edge, and—above all—the place where it appears are enough to identify them without any equipment.

Appearance What it is Where it appears Bed bugs?
Black dots 1–2 mm in size, like from a pen, sometimes in groups Bed bug excrement: digested blood Seams, perimeter piping, labels, handles, bed base joints Yes
Reddish or reddish-brown marks, small and isolated Blood from a crushed bed bug or a bite Bedsheet and body contact area Indirect
Large, diffuse yellow ring, with a slightly darker edge Oxidized sweat and body moisture Center of the mattress, at shoulder and hip height No
Brown ring with a defined circle, sometimes with an odor Old urine or spilled liquid Pelvic area, or where the liquid fell No
Gray or greenish stains with little dots and a musty odor Mold Bottom of the mattress, against the bed base or wall No

The practical difference between the first two rows and the last three is huge: the first two are a pest problem and are resolved with treatment; the last three are a hygiene problem and are resolved by cleaning and, above all, preventing it from happening again.

The damp cloth test, in 30 seconds

This is the only home method that truly distinguishes bed bug excrement from a speck of dirt or dry mold. It works because bed bug excrement is digested blood: it dissolves in water and runs. Dirt and mold do not.

  1. Take a cloth or cotton ball that is white, dampen it with cold water, and wring it out well: it must be damp, not wet.
  2. Place it on the black dot and press for about five seconds. Do not rub: rubbing spreads the stain and skews the result.
  3. Lift the cloth and look at it against the light. If a reddish, rust, or light brown halo has remained, it is bed bug excrement.
  4. If the cloth comes out clean and the dot remains exactly the same, it is not bed bugs: it is embedded dirt, a speck of ink, or dry mold.
  5. Repeat it on two or three different dots before giving a verdict. A single dot decides nothing.

Do it with natural light or with your phone's flashlight at an angle, almost touching the fabric. Bed bug stains are much more visible when the light enters from the side than when you look at them head-on.

Where to look exactly

Bed bugs do not wander around the center of the mattress: they hide in dark crevices and come out only at night. That is why the trail almost always appears in three places, and in this order.

First

Seams and perimeter piping

The piping that runs around the entire edge of the mattress is their favorite hiding place. Run your fingers along the entire length, separating the seam, on both sides.

Next

Labels, handles, and zippers

Under the composition label and inside the side handles. These are permanent folds and are never cleaned.

And also

Bed base, storage bed, and headboard

Wooden joints, screws, and the back of the headboard. If the mattress has a trail, the bed base almost always does too.

Diagnose your stain

Choose what the stain looks like and if there are any other signs. The diagnosis appears below.

1. What does the stain look like?

2. Are there more signs? Bites in a row, a strange sweet odor, insects, or translucent skins

Bed bugs, with a very high probability

Black dots in the seams plus bites or skins is the typical picture. Do not buy a spray and spray it: it does not reach where they are. You need a complete protocol—washing at 60 °C, vacuuming the seams, isolating the bed—and almost always a pest control company.

Two things at once

The yellow ring is sweat, no one disputes that. But sweat does not explain the bites. Do the cloth test on the seams before taking anything for granted: you can have an old sweat stain and, in addition, the beginning of an infestation.

Rule out bed bugs

Spilled liquid, plus something else to check

The brown ring is urine or a drink, not bed bugs. But the rest of the signs do point to a pest problem, so check the piping and labels with the cloth test. The stain and the bites are two independent problems and are treated separately.

Rule out bed bugs

Probably bite blood

Small reddish stains on the sheet, without a wound that explains them, and bites: it is the second classic trail of bed bugs. Now look for the black dots in the seams to confirm it and treat the entire room, not just the mattress.

Probably not bed bugs

Without bites or skins, black dots that do not run with the cloth are dirt or mold. Look at the bottom of the mattress and the slats of the bed base: if there are gray dots and a musty odor, it is condensation mold. Ventilate daily, separate the bed from the wall, and put a breathable protector so that moisture does not stay inside.

Sweat. It is the most common stain of all

A person can lose up to half a liter of sweat in a single night, and the mattress absorbs a good part of it. The yellow ring can be lightened, but it never completely disappears. What you can do is cut the problem off at the root: a breathable protector collects that moisture and is washed in the washing machine (Morfeo's, at 30 °C maximum).

Prevent it from happening again

Urine or spilled liquid

The defined ring betrays a liquid that spread and dried from the outside in. If it is recent, it is treated with enzymes. If it has penetrated the core, no surface cleaning will get it out: the odor returns with moisture. To prevent it from happening again, you need a waterproof barrier, not just an absorbent fabric.

Blood, and nothing else

Without bites or other traces, reddish marks are usually from menstruation, a wound, or scratching. The golden rule: always cold water. Heat coagulates the protein in the blood and fixes it to the fabric forever, so no hot water or dryer.

How to remove each stain

Two rules before starting. The first: never soak a mattress. If you put water in it, it will take days to dry inside and you will end up with mold, which is worse than the stain. The second: always work from the edge to the center, so as not to enlarge the ring.

Stain With what How What not to do
Sweat (yellow) 10 volume hydrogen peroxide and baking soda Spray lightly, sprinkle baking soda, leave for 30–60 min and vacuum Do not repeat it many times in a row: rinse the fabric
Urine Enzymatic cleaner Spray, let it work for the time indicated by the manufacturer (usually 10–15 min), remove with a damp cloth and air dry Do not use ammonia: the odor reminds you of urine and can attract repeats
Blood Cold water and, if necessary, hydrogen peroxide Cold dabbing cloth, always cold, until it stops transferring Never hot water: it fixes the stain
Bed bug excrement Cold water and neutral soap Dabbing, cold, after having treated the pest Cleaning before treating the pest does nothing: it comes back
Mold 70° alcohol Dampened cloth, rub gently, and dry in the sun if possible No bleach: it bleaches and damages the fibers
  1. Remove all bedding and wash it at 60 °C if the label allows.
  2. Vacuum the entire mattress, with the narrow nozzle on the seams and piping.
  3. Apply the product from the table, only on the stain and without soaking.
  4. Remove the rest with a cloth dampened in clean water, also dabbing.
  5. Dry. Cross ventilation, fan if you have one, and do not put sheets until it is completely dry. It usually takes four to six hours.

What a protector prevents and what it doesn't

Let's be precise

A mattress protector prevents sweat, urine, saliva, blood, and skin cells from reaching the core. All that stays in a fabric that you put in the washing machine, instead of in the mattress. That is exactly what prevents the yellow ring from forming again.

A protector does not solve an active bed bug infestation. Ours, like most sold in Spain, are in bed skirt format, with a perimeter elastic: they cover the top and sides, but do not enclose the mattress. Against bed bugs, a full zippered cover that seals the six sides would be needed. We do not sell it, and we prefer to say it before selling you something that does not do that job.

A protector also does not erase a stain that is already there. It is for what comes from today on, not for yesterday.

When the mattress is beyond saving

There are three situations in which continuing to clean is a waste of time. We do not say it to sell you a mattress: we say it because people spend months rubbing something that is no longer fixable.

It is beyond saving

The stain has penetrated the core

If you press and the area is rigid or smells, the liquid reached the foam. No surface product gets in there.

It is beyond saving

Mold inside

Gray dots on the bottom side and persistent odor. Mold in a foam is not removed, only covered.

It is beyond saving

Bed bugs inside the core

If there is a trail inside after opening the cover, or the pest returns after two treatments, the mattress is a breeding ground.

If you have to change it, let it be the last scare

The Original Hybrid, the VisCool, and the Juvenil Lite come with a removable and washable cover (the Nature, the Altus, and the XL do not), and their warranty covers up to 95 kg per person across the entire range, with the XL Mattress designed for more than 100 kg. They are made in Yecla, Murcia, and you have 100 nights to try.

Frequently asked questions

What color are bed bug stains?

Black or very dark brown, in dots one to two millimeters in size, sometimes grouped forming little stains. When dampened, they run and leave a reddish halo, because they are digested blood. The lighter reddish marks that appear on the sheet are blood from a crushed bed bug or from the bite itself.

Are bed bug stains removed by washing the mattress?

The stain does come out with cold water and neutral soap, but that does not eliminate the pest: bed bugs live in the seams, the bed base, and the headboard, not in the stain. If you clean before treating the infestation, the trail reappears in a few days.

Can yellow mattress stains be completely removed?

Completely, almost never. Sweat oxidizes the fibers and the yellowing becomes part of the fabric. It can be lightened quite a bit with 10 volume hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, but the only thing that really works is preventing them from forming, with a washable protector.

Does a mattress protector protect against bed bugs?

No, if it is in bed skirt format like most—including ours—. It protects against liquids, stains, and mites, because they stay in the fabric, but it does not enclose the mattress. Against bed bugs, a full zippered cover that seals the six sides would be needed.

Can I use bleach on the mattress?

No. Bleach fades the fabric, weakens the fibers, and leaves a residue that is then in contact with your skin for eight hours every night. For organic stains, 10-volume hydrogen peroxide is more effective and much less harsh.

What temperature should a mattress protector be washed at?

At the temperature indicated on its label: Morfeo protectors at 30°C maximum, because a hotter wash can damage the fabric. Sheets, on the other hand, should be washed at 60°C to reduce mites.

How often should the protector be washed?

Every two or three weeks with normal use, and every week if you sweat a lot, it is hot, or there is an allergy in the house. It is the same frequency we recommend for sheets.

Let the next stain stay on the protector

Fitted sheet format, with an elastic perimeter, and in the washing machine at 30°C when it's time.
