How to choose the best duvet
When it comes to getting a good night's sleep, the bedding is just as important as having a good mattress. Duvets or winter duvets are used on winter nights for their comfort; they are breathable, provide excellent insulation against the cold, and maintain a constant temperature. What do we need to consider when choosing the best duvet?
1. Filling
Generally, a duvet is made with duck or goose feathers or down, both natural fibers that are very lightweight and soft, but can cause allergies. Today, there are alternatives to traditional duvets made with synthetic materials and natural fibers that mimic down and tend to cause fewer problems for people with allergies.
Natural duvet
Down is a natural material that is very lightweight and pleasant to sleep under. If we choose this type of duvet, we should carefully check the percentage of down, as this will indicate its ability to insulate against the cold. The higher the down content, the better it will insulate against the cold. These duvets feel pleasant; however, they can cause allergic reactions and lose feathers over time. The most common down duvets on the market are made with duck and goose feathers. Down duvets contain materials of animal origin.
Synthetic duvet
Synthetic duvets are usually more affordable than those with natural fillings, and they are also easier to maintain and wash. Synthetic fillings tend to cause fewer problems for people with allergies, which is why they are often recommended for children and people with allergies. The materials used for these duvets are fiber or microfiber, polyester, or silicone. Now they can even be found with specific anti-dust mite fabrics and treatments, or even with aloe vera in their composition, making them more pleasant to the touch. These duvets provide a comfortable thermal sensation, insulate as well as down duvets (depending on their thickness and fibers), and are lightweight and pleasant to sleep under.
2. Weight
Another important aspect to consider when choosing the best duvet for a good night's sleep is its weight or thickness. This is what will indicate its ability to insulate against the cold and retain heat while you sleep. The higher the weight, the greater its heat retention; the lower the weight, the cooler the duvet will be. Manufacturers usually indicate the duvet's weight, as well as its warmth level (warm, cool, four-season), and which season of the year it is recommended for.
During the coldest months, weights above 250 g/m² are usually recommended, as this will ensure that heat is better retained and we don't feel cold while sleeping. During cooler months or seasons, such as spring, you can opt for a duvet with a weight of 100 g/m², which is lightweight and cooler to sleep under. There are also models called "four-season" duvets, which include or combine two detachable duvets to add more warmth or remove it, depending on your needs.
3. Dimensions
In addition to what has been mentioned above, we should consider the size of the duvet. This is important because if the duvet is too short on the sides, you are more likely to be uncovered or feel cold during the night. It is recommended to choose a size larger than the bed to leave 20–30 cm on each side, ensuring thermal comfort throughout the night.
4. Maintenance
Perhaps the most important thing to consider when choosing the best duvet is maintenance. The easier it is to wash and keep in perfect condition, the better, without compromising, of course, on quality and comfort. It is recommended to choose duvets that can be machine-washed.
