When should pillows be replaced?

Over time, pillows lose firmness, quality, and their benefits due to use. Just as we need to renew our mattress every so often to guarantee the best rest, pillows also need to be replaced.

So, how often should we replace pillows? Ideally, pillows should be replaced once a year or every two years at most. However, this period may vary depending on certain factors that may indicate it is already time to change your pillows.

If you are unsure about what height you need when replacing it, we explain it according to your sleeping position in what is the best pillow for sleeping. And if you use more than one, check how many pillows you should sleep with.

Reasons to replace pillows

We must bear in mind that we spend a significant amount of time sleeping. Our rest depends on having the ideal sleep equipment, as well as ensuring it is in optimal condition to provide a quality sleep.

Wear and tear from use and other factors can negatively affect our rest, requiring us to replace our pillows with ones that retain all their properties. What are the reasons to replace a pillow?

When it loses its shape

Use after use, our pillow gradually loses firmness and ages a little more every day. If we sleep with the pillow folded, these effects are multiplied, and over time we may notice that our pillow has lost its initial shape and ergonomics.

There are warning signs that help us see if our pillow has undergone changes in its shape:

- Appearance of lumps: This happens when the pillow filling accumulates in a specific area, creating new shapes and bulges that reduce comfort during our rest.

- The pillow feels flattened: Sometimes, pillows lose their thickness over time. To maintain proper spinal alignment and posture while sleeping, the pillow must have a certain height. A pillow that is too flat can cause you to wake up with discomfort in your neck and back.

A perfect pillow should be fluffy, comfortable, have a certain thickness, a uniform shape, and softness. Any alteration we can notice in its structure, quality, filling, shape, etc., is a clear indicator that our pillow has reached the end of its lifespan and we should replace it with a new one.

Dirty or deteriorated pillow

Even if we don't think so, when we sleep our skin sweats, releases oils and waste that become embedded in the fibers of our pillow. Therefore, it is important to protect our pillow with a pillowcase and sheets. This is because this dirt can lead to the appearance of bacteria, mites, and fungi.

In addition to this oil and sweat, dirt such as dust accumulates daily. It is very important to change the sheets every so often (once a week) to remove this dirt and maintain good sleep hygiene.

The pillowcase should be washed every one to two weeks to ensure proper cleanliness. As for the pillow, follow the washing instructions on its label: memory foam ones usually cannot be washed, so it is best to air them out often and wash their pillowcase frequently.

There are certain signs that warn us of the need to change the pillow due to dirt:

- Appearance of stains on its surface despite proper cleaning and protection.

- Bad odor: this usually happens when we sweat a lot during the night and moisture accumulates.

- Bacteria appear that promote the appearance of odor.

The pillow should provide us with a feeling of freshness, especially after cleaning it. If this does not happen, it may be time to replace it.

Loss of quality and comfort

One of the main reasons we choose a pillow and not another is comfort. To get the best rest, our pillow must be very comfortable. If it isn't, change it!

When our pillow lacks that feeling of comfort, it is harder for us to fall asleep. Whether due to an injury or changes in our sleeping habits, if a pillow does not provide you with comfort and ease, it is better not to use it and replace it with another.

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to sleeping, and this means that the type of pillow depends on the user's use and preferences. Some people need more support in the neck, so changing the pillow over time is a guarantee that you will sleep better. After all, comfort is key to our rest.

If it is time to change your pillow

Choose the new one according to how you sleep

Your sleeping position determines the height: the more space there is between your neck and the mattress, the higher it needs to be.
