What to look for in an ottoman bed

An ottoman bed is a mattress base with storage underneath: the top lifts up and the inside of the bed can be used to store bedding, blankets or seasonal clothes. Many look similar on the outside. What sets them apart are six details.

1. Useful height, not total height

Total height is the height of the ottoman bed from the floor to the top. Useful height is how much fits inside the storage compartment, and this is the figure that really tells you how much you can store. Always ask for it. In Morfeo, it ranges from the Niza's 16 cm, which sacrifices storage space to leave room under the bed, to the Rodas' 28.5 cm.

2. The top: letting the mattress breathe

The top is the surface your mattress rests on. If it doesn't ventilate, body moisture gets trapped between the two. Look for a breathable top: the Sofy's is made of breathable 3D fabric with ventilation valves; the Niza's is a multi-perforated board with non-slip fabric.

3. Opening

You will open it with the mattress on top, so it must lift smoothly and stay up. According to their product sheets, the Sofy, Niza, Rodas and Duna open from the front with hydraulic pistons. If your bed is against a wall, read our guide on side-opening ottoman beds first.

4. Floor-level or raised

A floor-level ottoman bed uses the full height for the storage compartment. One raised on legs leaves space underneath: the robot vacuum can pass through, you can clean without moving the bed and, if you have underfloor heating, heat circulates better. The Niza leaves about 12 cm free from the floor and the Saona sits on 12 cm legs.

5. Fitting through the door

A single-piece top measuring 180 or 200 cm wide may not fit through a narrow hallway or elevator. At Morfeo, all 180 and 200 cm ottoman beds come with a split top.

6. Weight capacity

A double bed with two people and a mattress on top supports a lot of weight every night. Morfeo ottoman beds support over 100 kg per person. If either person weighs over 95 kg, the appropriate mattress is the XL Mattress; we explain this in the guide on mattresses for overweight people.

The most common mistake

Choosing the ottoman bed by its total height. Two ottoman beds of similar height can differ by 10 cm in storage space: the Niza measures 34.5 cm and has 16 cm of storage; the Sofy measures 34 cm and has 26.5 cm. The first offers more free space underneath; the second, more storage capacity.

Wooden or upholstered ottoman bed?

It's not just about aesthetics. It changes maintenance and how it fits into the bedroom.

Wooden ottoman bed Upholstered ottoman bed
Appearance Clean lines, white or wood-tone finishes Warmer and more decorative, with fabric texture
Cleaning On the Sofy and Rodas, the melamine bottom of the storage compartment is cleaned with a damp cloth Depending on the fabric: the Duna's bouclé is cleaned with a damp cloth; the Saona's Versa fabric is easy to maintain
Set with headboard Combines with any headboard The Saona forms a set with the Saona headboard

Quick rule: if you want maximum capacity for the lowest price, choose wood. If the ottoman bed is the piece that decorates the bedroom, choose upholstery.
