Colchón Morfeo en un dormitorio: guía para quitar las manchas del colchón

How to remove mattress stains, depending on the type of stain

By the Morfeo sleep team, mattress manufacturers in Yecla (Murcia) · Updated in September 2026

Quick answer

Three rules for any stain: use cold water, never rub, and never soak. Hot water sets the proteins in urine, blood, and sweat, fixing the stain forever. Rubbing pushes it deeper, where you can no longer reach it. And soaking the mattress turns it into a worse problem than the stain. Work from the outside in, blotting and removing with a white cloth, and let it dry completely before making the bed.

At the factory, we see mattresses with all kinds of stains, and almost always the damage wasn't caused by the stain: it was caused by the attempt to remove it. Hot water, bleach, scrubbing with a brush, or a steam cleaner. This is what really works, stain by stain.

The three rules you must not skip

1

Cold water, always

Urine, blood, and sweat are proteins. Heat coagulates them and fixes them to the fabric. With hot water, the stain will not come out.

2

Blot, do not rub

Rest the cloth on the stain, press, and blot. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it into the foam, where you can no longer reach it.

3

From the outside in

Start at the edge of the stain and work toward the center. Otherwise, you'll enlarge it and leave a ring.

Two answers

Your stain, step by step

What is the stain?

Is it fresh or dry?

Fresh urineAbsorb first, clean later

1. Cover with paper towels or a dry cloth and press to absorb as much as possible, without rubbing. 2. Blot the area with a cloth dampened with cold water and a dash of white vinegar (half and half). 3. Cover with baking soda, leave to dry for several hours, and vacuum.

Fresh bloodCold water and nothing else

1. A white cloth dampened only with very cold water: blood comes out on its own if it isn't heated. 2. Blot and remove, changing the area of the cloth each time. 3. If a ring remains, use pharmacy-grade hydrogen peroxide (3%) with a cotton swab, without overdoing it. Let it air dry.

Fresh sweatBaking soda and ventilation

1. Air the bare mattress for a few hours with a cross breeze. 2. Cover the area with baking soda and leave it overnight: it absorbs moisture and odor. 3. Vacuum thoroughly. If it's still visible, move on to the method for dry yellow stains.

Dry urineThe odor is the difficult part, not the stain

1. Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide, a couple of tablespoons of baking soda, and a drop of dish soap. 2. Apply with a cloth, without soaking it, and leave it to work for one hour. 3. Remove with a cloth dampened with cold water, cover with baking soda, and vacuum once dry. If the odor returns after a few days, it has reached the core.

Dry bloodSoften before removing

1. Dampen the crust with cold water and wait ten minutes to soften it. 2. Remove what comes off by blotting with the cloth. 3. Apply a paste of baking soda and cold water to the rest, leave for thirty minutes, and remove. Repeat rather than insisting: three gentle passes are better than one strong one.

Yellow stainsThey are oxidized sweat

1. 3% hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and a drop of dish soap, applied with a cloth. 2. Leave to work for one hour. 3. Remove while damp and dry with a fan. They will lighten considerably, but rarely disappear completely: the fabric is already dyed.

Always test any mixture on a hidden corner of the mattress before applying it to the stain. And ventilate the room while you work.

Every stain and its method

Stain What to use What to avoid
Urine Diluted white vinegar + baking soda Hot water and ammonia (it smells similar and attracts pets)
Blood Very cold water; 3% hydrogen peroxide if a ring remains Any heat source
Sweat and yellow stains Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + a drop of soap Bleach: it yellows the fabric more and weakens the fibers
Vomit Remove while dry, then diluted vinegar and baking soda Soaking it to "flush it out"
Coffee, wine, or tea Cold water with a drop of dish soap Salt (it doesn't absorb vertically, it only spreads it)
Mold There is no reliable home remedy Covering it with a protector: it keeps growing underneath

Why yellow stains appear

It's not dirt: it's oxidized sweat. Every night, about half a liter is perspired, part of which passes through the sheets and stays in the mattress fabric. Over time and with oxygen, those residues oxidize and turn yellow, just like the collar of a white shirt.

That's why they always appear in the same areas—where the head and hips rest—and that's why they never go away completely even if you clean well: the fabric has already taken on the color. They lighten, the spread is stopped, but they never return to the original white.

Morfeo Tencel Mattress Protector
The yellow stain won't return if it doesn't reach the mattress

A full-size protector catches the sweat before it reaches the fabric and can be washed in the washing machine (Morfeo's, at 30°C maximum). The Tencel one adds a waterproof barrier for liquids.

What you should never use

  • Bleach. It yellows the fabric instead of whitening it, weakens it, and leaves a residue right where you breathe for eight hours.
  • Ammonia on urine stains. It smells similar to urine and, if you have a pet, it's an invitation for them to repeat it in the same spot.
  • Steam cleaner. It forces hot water under pressure into the mattress: it sets the stain and soaks the core.
  • Heater or radiator placed against it. Direct heat deforms the viscoelastic foam.
  • Mixing products. Never bleach with ammonia or vinegar: it generates toxic gases. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are more than enough for almost everything.

Before you keep insisting

There are stains that are no longer the problem

  • The odor returns after a few days: moisture reached the core
  • You can see a dip where you sleep: the support has given out
  • There is mold: it cannot be removed, it must be replaced
  • It is more than 8 years old: you are cleaning a mattress that has already finished

Morfeo's recommendation

The stain is removed once. The protector prevents the next

Any liquid reaches the core of the mattress much sooner than it seems, and once there, no cleaning product can reach it. A waterproof, machine-washable protector turns the next accident into a laundry load, without having to rub the mattress again.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove yellow stains from the mattress?

With 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a drop of dish soap, applied with a cloth and left to work for one hour. They lighten considerably, but rarely disappear completely: they are oxidized sweat and the fabric has already taken on the color.

How do I remove a urine stain from a mattress?

If it's fresh, absorb with paper towels by pressing without rubbing and treat the area with equal parts cold water and white vinegar. If it's dry, use hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and a drop of soap. In both cases, finish with baking soda overnight and vacuum.

What about blood stains?

Only with very cold water, blotting and removing with a white cloth. Hot water coagulates blood and fixes it to the fabric. If a ring remains, use 3% hydrogen peroxide with a cotton swab.

Can bleach be used?

No. It yellows the fabric, weakens it, and leaves a chemical residue where you will sleep. For organic stains, diluted hydrogen peroxide works better and does not damage the mattress.

How long does it take for a mattress to dry after cleaning it?

Between 4 and 8 hours with an open window and a cross breeze, faster with a fan pointed at the area. Do not make the bed until it is completely dry or mold will grow.

Is a specific stain remover worth it?

For fresh stains, it's not necessary: baking soda, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide solve almost everything. If you buy one, make sure it's bleach-free and test it first on a hidden corner.

Does a mattress protector prevent yellow stains?

Yes, because the sweat stays in the protector and does not reach the mattress fabric. It is the only real way to prevent them: once the mattress yellows, it lightens but does not return to the original white. And the protector is machine washable; Morfeo's, at 30°C maximum.

When should you replace the mattress instead of cleaning it?

If there is mold, if the odor returns a few days after cleaning it, or if you can see a dip in the area where you sleep. None of those three things can be fixed with a cleaning.
