How to Make a Tipi at Home

It's becoming more and more common to find or use Indian tipis to decorate kids' rooms. They're a unique idea that lets you create a special space just for the little ones.

As a place for playing, resting, reading… Tipis allow for many activities inside, and kids absolutely love them. You might be wondering what a tipi is, so we'll tell you all about it next.

What is a tipi?

It's a type of tent traditionally used by indigenous peoples in North America. Nowadays, it's become a super popular item with kids because it gives them their very own special corner. Plus, you can find tons of ideas on blogs and kids' decor websites.

This idea lets you have a fun time, build something together, and give them a useful and decorative space to use for naps, reading, games, and more. It can be used as a kids' decor item, for outdoor decoration, playgrounds, sleepovers, and a whole bunch of other possibilities. But, how can we make a tipi at home?

It's super easy, and we'll show you how right now.

DIY: Make Your Own Tipi

You can buy tipis in lots of places, but you can also make one yourself at home, and it's a really fun activity to do with the family.

Materials

  • Four wooden poles or sticks.
  • Fabric of your choice (180cm x 270cm).
  • Rope for tying.
  • Screws.
  • Scissors.
  • Drill.
  • Screwdriver.

Making a Tipi

Once you have all your materials, it's super simple! First, grab your rope and cut a long piece – remember, it's going to connect the poles, so make sure it's long enough.

Seal the ends with a lit candle or a lighter to stop the rope from fraying. Next, grab your drill and make a hole at the top of each pole (they should all be at the same height). This way, you can thread the rope through and secure it better.

Thread the rope through one of the poles and tie a knot at one end. Now, grab another pole, reinforce it with the rope by wrapping it two or three times, and then move on to the next pole. Repeat this process until all the poles are joined, wrap it to secure everything, and double-check that the structure is firmly in place.

Now it's time to add the fabric! You can measure it before or after putting it on the frame. We'll wrap the fabric around the structure and secure it with screws to make sure it doesn't fall off. And voilà!

Plus, we can add decorations like pennants, lanterns, dreamcatchers, extra fabrics, and anything else we can think of to decorate our tipi.

You can also simplify the assembly by just using rope to secure everything, both for the poles and then to hold the fabric in place.

If you can't get all the materials, no worries! You can totally improvise your own tipi with some chairs, fabric, and a little imagination 🙂 You can even add it to your kids' bed to make their nights more fun. As you can see, there are tons of ways to make a tipi at home. Ready to give it a try?
