What is Feng Shui?
You've probably heard of Feng Shui at some point. But very few of us know what this philosophy actually entails. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese discipline characterized by the art of evaluating and harmonizing our surroundings to improve our quality of life. According to this philosophy, everything is connected by a flow of energy, Chi.
This force must flow through the conversion of negative energy into positive energy. Applying these Feng Shui principles to interior design creates greater comfort, tranquility, and relaxation.
It is based on the use of natural elements to create harmony in your home. To achieve this, it follows a series of principles regarding furniture placement, orientation, colors, shapes, etc.
Feng Shui decoration for the bedroom
Feng Shui decoration for the bedroom is essential for achieving harmony and promoting a good rest. Intimacy and tranquility are the basis for creating a special atmosphere in the room where we spend most of our time: the bedroom.
Shape and arrangement of furniture
Based on the principles of Feng Shui, the ideal shape for an optimal environment for rest should be rectangular or square. This geometry corresponds to the earth element and provides stability and balance of energy. In this way, all elements such as furniture should be placed in such a way as to create a closed structure through which energy can circulate.
Materials
This discipline is based on the five elements of nature (fire, water, air, earth, and spirit or mind). There must always be a balance between them. Therefore, it is recommended to use furniture made from natural materials such as wood and bedding made from fabrics such as wool, linen, or cotton, avoiding synthetic materials. This attracts positive energy that will enhance our rest.
Placement of the bed
According to Feng Shui doctrine, the bed is the most important piece of furniture in this room. Therefore, it cannot be placed just anywhere. It should not be positioned in the direct flow between doors and windows (do not place it in the middle), but it can be next to the door. The headboard should be placed against the wall, avoiding placing the bed in the center of the room.
On the right side of the bed, there should be a low piece of furniture, such as a small table, as a symbol of protection, while on the left side there should be a tall piece of furniture representing wisdom.
The foot of the bed should always be clear, as it symbolizes our inspiration and must be able to flow easily. The location of the bed is essential for energy to flow perfectly, so it cannot be placed in front of a door or window.
Less is more
Feng Shui seeks to promote the flow of energy and ensure that it circulates throughout the bedroom. To achieve this, order is essential, and the room should be as uncluttered as possible.
Less is always more, and with the furniture, bed, mattress, and pillow, the room is complete. We sometimes go overboard when decorating our bedroom, but this is a mistake. According to Feng Shui, too many elements channel negative energies.
So, to get the best rest , clear the walls and the area around the bed.
Candles or a vase with flowers on a tall piece of furniture in the bedroom are permitted within this philosophy, as they represent the elements of water and fire.
Colors
The color par excellence is white. However, it can be accompanied by other colors in the decor. Always soft tones, not too bright, to promote relaxation (light blues, light greens, pinks, pastel shades, etc.). Blue is one of the colors that, due to its symbolism, most invites relaxation, and Feng Shui also favors it in its decorative style.
As for lighting, direct light from spotlights or lamps should be avoided. Natural light is preferred, and in the case of artificial lighting, it should be soft and indirect to promote tranquility and rest.
Mirrors
Mirrors collect energy, and Feng Shui does not recommend placing more than two mirrors in the bedroom. But be careful where you put them. They should not be placed at the foot of the bed or anywhere else where you can see yourself reflected while you sleep. They should reflect pleasant images that help you rest.
Plants
Placing plants is vital for harmonizing a room and providing oxygen. They should be placed near the window. However, plants with thorns or long leaves should be avoided, as it is not advisable to sleep near them at night.
